Top 10 Nail Fungus Prevention Tips

Nail fungus can damage the nails in a gradual manner. It may just be a slight discoloration at first, usually, on the toenails. However, if you do nothing to treat it, it will surely become bad enough to make your, otherwise, beautiful feet turn ugly. There are many effective means to treat nail fungus. Nevertheless, you should learn how to prevent it from happening if you still did not catch this menace. Here are ten prevention tips that have been proven to work.

1. If you have to go to a salon to have your nails done, make sure that the instruments they used are sanitary. Ask the staff to have these sterilized well first. However, if you have your own kit, you might as well bring it.
2. Choose well the socks you are going to wear. If the weather is too warm, avoid wearing thick ones. Thick socks can encourage your feet to sweat and render you toenails vulnerable to fungal growth.
3. In really warm weather, allow your feet to enjoy the air. Wear sandals that provide your toes enough exposure to the sun's heat. This is the best way to rid your nails of any sign of fungi.
4. If you have to wear closed shoes most of the time, make sure that you have an effective foot powder to use regularly. Apply it before wearing your socks. However, make sure that you have dried your feet well, especially those areas between the toes.
5. Protect your feet when walking in areas where many people use. These can be the supermarket, the beach, or the public pool. Flip-flops or sandals are best for these places. Nevertheless, if your toes still get dirty, wash them immediately of apply sanitizer on it.
6. Protect your hands when doing manual work such as gardening, cleaning your car, or other tasks that deal with water. Gloves made of rubber are good enough to provide the necessary protection for your hands.
7. Clip your nails on a regular basis. Short nails prevent the build-up of germs or fungus. Oftentimes, the dirt that long nails hide is the factors that can trigger a fungal outbreak. You do not have to make your nails too short though.
8. If you are treating your toenails from nail fungus or cleaning it, make sure to sanitize you hands afterwards. Otherwise, what you are trying to rid your toenails of may just transfer to your hands instead.
9. Leave the skin around your nails just as clean too. Do not clip it though. This serves to protect the sides of your nail. If you clip it, you leave your nails vulnerable.
10. If you feel that you already have signs of nail fungus, treat it immediately. This will prevent the fungi from spreading to other nails.
