The Perfect Diaper Bag For New Modern Parents

So, first things first. I guess I should start off by saying congratulations. You're having a baby. Now comes the hard part. Choosing the right diaper bag. It's not easy. And as a dad of a 9 month old, I know, I've been there. As a new parent, you really don't know what to expect. But the truth is, for every person you ask, you get a different answer. Which makes things even more confusing. While most parents candy coat the truth, I'll tell you straight up how it is. No sugar.

Here we go. The perfect bag for new parents who'd like to remain fashionable and modern should have four major qualities. Large, but not humongous. Not look like a diaper bag. Make you feel proud to carry it. And finally, it should have a life after diapers.

So let's talk size. Since new parents don't really know what to expect, they like to carry everything. Yes, I've been guilty of that a few times. Your diaper bag should have, and most do, room for diapers, wipes, bottles, snacks and a toy or two. So, no sense in wasting time on that. An extra pocket or hook for your phone, wallet and keys comes in handy unless you like to carry two bags. Try carrying a newborn and two bags and, well, that's a lot of baggage. Now for the non candy coated truth. For some unearthly reason, poo has a way to defy gravity. When your infant is sitting in a car seat, poo can and will find its way up and out the diaper and leave its mark on that precious outfit. And unless you want your baby to be a nudist, make sure your new diaper bag has enough room for an extra outfit, or two.

You now have to think about your diaper bag as an accessory. A permanent accessory. Because you will take it wherever you go. So choose wisely. If you're into modern styles, then it must be stylish, fashionable and/or hip. Most importantly, it should not scream diaper bag. Which means it must be designed really well with no fuzzy teddy bears or kiddie stuff. Remember, it's your bag, not your baby's. If you care at all about how you look, a great bag is essential.

The third quality is really an extension of the preceding idea. If you have a hip, modern diaper bag, you will look and feel great wearing it. You won't look silly. And you won't feel silly. Mine is a messenger style bag with a peace symbol on it. No teddy bear. No bunnies. Just cool, edgy graphics. Moms, there are many diaper bags out there that look like seriously hot and chic purses... filled with strained peas and wipees, of course. But no one will know that. They'll just see a sophisticated woman with a really nice bag.

This brings us to my final point. If you choose a diaper bag that's like a backpack, messenger bag, purse, hobo sack etc., then you've chosen wisely. Because these types of bags have life after diapers. You can use them as computer bags, hand bags and work bags. Imagine walking into work carrying a bag with a teddy bear pattern on it. Not gonna fly. And after you've spent a fair amount of your child's college fund on a diaper bag, it's reassuring knowing that it may end up in college as well.
