Adult Incontinence

Adult incontinence is a silent problem for more than 12 million Americans. Stress incontinence is a main cause, mainly in women. This is the leaking of urine when laughing or coughing. The other cause of incontinence is overactive bladder (OAD). This is caused by urinary muscle spasms that create an urgency to urinate. Many patients who suffer from incontinence do no tell their healthcare provider about the problem because they feel it is a factor of growing old.

For those living with adult incontinence, it puts a damper on their day to day lifestyle. It can be such a problem that some choose not to do their normal activities because they are in fear. There are methods for dealing with an overactive bladder without taking medication. One way is to work on bladder training. Start urinating at specific times each day. In this method the urge to urinate is controlled by waiting set intervals before urinating. Begin by waiting only a few minutes, and then gradually stretch to an hour.

Another method is by doing pelvic floor exercises. These exercises are called Kegal exercises. These can be done at any time of the day and anywhere. The exercise is done by contracting and releasing the muscles that are used when urinating. These muscles become stronger due to the Kegal exercises. This allows the bladder to be able to control the urine more easily.

Other methods for dealing with adult incontinence involves taking a prescription medication. There are many medications available for overactive bladder. It is important to speak to a healthcare professional to discuss symptoms and what medication would be best. When all home methods and medications fail in treating incontinence, then surgery is sometimes necessary.

Living with incontinence does not need to be part of an every day lifestyle. If any man or woman feels that they are having and living with symptoms of incontinence, then they should seek help from their healthcare provider. The embarrassment and fear of overactive bladder can become a thing of the past.
